In heating mode, it extracts waste heat from the air or ground outside and transfers it inside to raise the temperature in the building using a liquid refrigerant that absorbs and releases heat as it evaporates and condenses. In cooling mode, the system draws heat from the indoor air and releases it outdoors to effectively lower the temperature in the building, using the same refrigerant and a reversing valve to reverse the process.
